Rightly or wrongly, I’ve always felt that Malaysians were never ready for the live-in maids that middle-class households suddenly became able to afford in the 1990s. The living arrangements never seemed quite right and the boundaries (physical and non-) were never properly drawn. We take liberties with them that we wouldn’t take with anyone else, in any other set-up or situation.
This wasn’t the first case of its kind and in the other ones that memory serves the guilty were all, for other intents and purposes, rational and functional citizens who stepped over the line.
It’s shameful. So shameful in fact that I’m almost certain we won’t deal with it. We never broach the uncomfortable creases.
